CAPRI was founded in 1958, by a selective group of socialites at that time, under the stewardship of one Mr. Saki, an Italian by birth and an Executive Chef of the prestigious Galle Face Hotel in Colombo.

CAPRI in Latin meant, Circolo Amichevole Per Residenti Italiani, meaning, the circle of friends of Italian residents. The Italian Ambassador at that time was closely associated as Patron of CAPRI, and So did his successors over the years.

Initially, there were thirty (30) members, but this number progressively increased with the Sri Lankan (then Ceylon) elite families comprising of corporate business and mercantile sector decision makers and planters. Some of the Sri Lankan founder members were Mr. George Bobbiehese, Mr. Tita Nathanielsz and Mr. Ralf Fernando.

CAPRI was first located in a spacious upstair bungalow in Green Path, recently named Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha. In 1969, it moved to its present address, 62, Turret Road, now named Dharmapala Mawatha to a property named CARLTON LODGE, owned by the distinguished Corea family of Chilaw, who were well known for their benevolence.

After World War 2, there were only a few hotels and restaurants of standing that could cater to the elite, and CAPRI in its prime location, amidst the colonial era ambiance of the Corea mansion, thrived as a leading fine dining and wining club with cuisine served by a well-trained staff, serving a highly elite membership of recognized and accepted social standing.
